Digital-game developer Cie Games operates out of a high-rise office tower in Long Beach, California, with a seagull’s-eye view of both the retired RMS Queen Mary ocean liner and the nation’s busiest container port. Cie’s proximity to the port is ironic: The trappings of the old economy—the manufactured goods being dumped onto the docks from China and elsewhere—compete directly for our discretionary spending with the virtual goods peddled by outfits such as Cie.
